AUNIC purchased by Australian Government

It seems the Australian Government has purchased AUNIC from Geoff Huston. They have paid $20,000 for the database which contains records for all sorts of domain name and ip registrations. Their next step will be to try and get control of .au from Robert Elz. I wouldn’t hold my breath for this one.
I’m not sure what the government intends to do with AUNIC. With their current track record on all things internet I wouldn’t be surprised if they stuff the system up completely and introduce a ton of red tape to get anything done. After all, they gave exclusive control of a public asset (.com.au) to MelbourneIT, giving them the opportunity to make millions, which the taxpayer has missed our on any sort of benefit from the sale of Australian domain names.
